News Outcome - Volcano in East Indonesia

June 23, 2008 - Activities have now resumed in the church projects in East Indonesia after the eruption of Mount Soputan. No Compassion children or families were harmed or affected during the eruption. The government provided masks for the nearby communities to filter the dust and debris.

News Update - Global Food Crisis (Bangladesh)

June 21, 2008 - Bangladesh is witnessing a bumper production of boro rice but due to high production cost and lack of transportation facilities, the price of rice remains high. Last year, 3 million tons of food grains were destroyed due to floods so less is being sold. Most of the Compassion projects were providing a meal five days a week, but that has increased to six days per week.

News Advisory - Strike in East India

June 20, 2008 - A strike has been declared in the regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong beginning on June 17, 2008. The strike, to claim a separate land called "Gorkhaland" from the government of West Bengal, also encompasses regions currently governed by the Hill Council. The poor are affected by the lack of transportation and frequent power outages.

June 19, 2008 - Burkina Faso. Compassion has provided food for the affected families in the Ouagadougou area and will be rebuilding homes for those who are still without secure shelter after heavy rains flooded some and rendered other displaced.

News Advisory - Heavy Rains in Mexico

June 16, 2008 - Several tropical storms battered the southeastern area of Mexico, producing heavy rains and damaging the homes of Compassion-assisted children in multiple projects. At least 12 partner churches reported heavy rains in the Juchitan area where two schools and one Compassion project are being used as shelters.

May 12, 2008 - 19 Compassion-assisted children in an Indonesia church project were evacuated because of flooding, which is common in this area during this time of year. The children are in good health and a proposal for funding is being prepared to respond to the situation. Detailed information is forthcoming as the situation is assessed.

May 11, 2008 - Compassion Bangladesh reports another week of inflation in the country, as people lose hope of a solution. With monsoon season approaching, the people of Bangladesh are concerned about the possible destruction of the rice crop worsening an already dire situation.

News Advisory - Economic Crisis in Bangladesh

April 23, 2008 - Economic Crisis in Bangladesh. A high rate of inflation is causing economic turmoil in Bangladesh, creating an emergence of famine as people are unable to afford the rising food costs and specifically rice. The average income for a poor worker in Bangladesh is approximately $1.00, with families requiring over a dollar’s worth of rice per day to survive.

News Advisory - Heavy Rains in Uganda

April 17, 2008 - One Compassion-assisted child in Uganda died when heavy rains in Soroti, Eastern Uganda caused his house to collapse. Another Compassion Project was severely affected by the storm, which destroyed 86 homes of Compassion-assisted children. Some project activities have been temporarily suspended pending assessment by Compassion staff.

News Outcome - Flooding and Dengue in Ecuador

April 16, 2008 - The provinces of El Oro, Manabí, Guayas and Los Ríos have been deeply affected by the dangerous situation as a result of the heavy rains and disease during the winter season. Many families have fled their homes and now reside in school buildings. Compassion Ecuador is receiving a transfer of Complementary Intervention funds, signaling that the situation has stabilized and recovery efforts are underway.

April 15, 2008 - The government in Haiti is in the process of being established and the violence has subsided. It is possible that the worst is over as millions of dollars in aid is reaching the Caribbean country. Currently, Compassion church projects and children have not been directly affected by looting or violence, though Compassion families are affected by the high rate of inflation.

April 11, 2008 - The economic situation in the country of Haiti is causing a dramatic rise in the price of vital products such as fuel and food. As a result of this economic crisis, the country is facing a vast famine. Protests have broken out throughout the country, and four people have been killed. So far, government officials cannot find a solution for the situation.

News Advisory - Bubonic Plague in Ecuador

April 09, 2008 - The Chimborazo Province has been declared a state of emergency, as a preventive measure, due to the recent outbreak of Bubonic Plague. The Public Health Ministry of Ecuador is testing fleas in the area and has quarantined the community. Inoculations were given to all children, staff and families. Since some homes were fumigated no other reports of the plague have emerged.

April 08, 2008 - Flooding and Dengue in Ecuador. The Ecuadorian government decided to resume formal education in the coastal region on April 11, as nine additional cases of dengue fever have been reported. The recent flooding disaster is the largest in a decade with a quarter of Ecuador’s population affected by the floods.

News Update - Dengue in Brazil

April 04, 2008 - The Compassion office in Brazil reports that the dengue epidemic, concentrated mostly in Rio de Janeiro, has caused the government to initiate a state of emergency until July. Staff, families and children in Compassion projects are taking protective measures to defend against the widespread disease. Project activities have not been interrupted as children attend daily in long sleeves, heavy clothing, shoes and socks to guard against mosquitoes.
