CEO Profile – Dr. Barry Slauenwhite

President and CEO
Compassion Canada

Dr. Barry Slauenwhite joined Compassion’s ministry in 1983 serving as Vice-President of Marketing and Church Ministry. In 1993, he was appointed the third president of Compassion Canada. During his 17 years as president, Compassion Canada has grown over 700%. Barry has led the ministry through extensive change and has been named “2009 Outstanding Leader” in a North American wide survey by the Best Christian Workplace.

Following his graduation from Masters College and Seminary (EPBC) in 1977, Barry began his ministry as a church planter in Prince Edward Island. After establishing a church in Montague, he continued on to pastor a multicultural church in the city of Bathurst, New Brunswick. In 2009, he graduated from the Canada Christian College School of Graduate Theological Studies with a Doctorate of Divinity (Hon). He is also a graduate of the CREST School of Strategic Leadership.

Barry serves on the panel of advisors for the Centre for Public Theology in the Faculty of Theology at Huron University College (at the University of Western Ontario, UWO) and is a regular speaker for the Ivey School of Business at UWO.

Barry has become a spokesperson for the poor. He travels the globe motivating Christians to reach out and help children at risk. Whether speaking to an audience of 10,000 in a contemporary church in Asia or a group of 10 native pastors under a tree in Africa, Barry shares his passion for the strategic potential of children in God’s kingdom. “Serving with Compassion is a perfect opportunity for me to use my gifts and skills to change the world,” says Barry. “I cannot imagine a better way to spend my life than investing it to develop children who otherwise would have no hope.” Barry goes on to say that, “The most loving & strategic intervention that can be done for children is to bring them, through the local church’s ministry, to their heavenly father. When a child comprehends that God loves them, their self-worth is improved and their ability to cope with life’s complex problems is enhanced.”

In 1988, Barry co-founded the Council of International Children’s Ministry (CICM) based in Oxford, United Kingdom. He served many years as chair of the International Council for the VIVA Network – a global coalition of Christian, children-at-risk ministries based in Oxford, United Kingdom. He also co-founded the International Alliance for Missions (IAM) and continues to serve as board chair. In addition, Barry serves as vice-chair of the Canadian Council of Christian Charities (CCCCs), and as a member on both the Christian Churches Network of London (CCNL) and the Servant Ministry Network boards.

Barry lives in London, Ontario, with his wife Sharon. The Slauenwhites have two adult daughters, Krista and Heather, a son-in-law, Jeff, and two granddaughters, Mariah and Presley.
