What is a Compassion project?

Compassion’s holistic child development program activities take place at church-based child development centres or “projects”. Sometimes activities take place in the church building or the church may have another facility designated for the child development centre. Each centre is within a 30-minute walk of the homes of the children it serves.

Program activities vary in detail according to the culture, environment, or needs of the area where the individual centres are located. However, there are common elements in all Compassion child development centres which ensure that all Compassion-assisted children are given the greatest opportunity to be released from spiritual, economic, social, emotional and physical poverty.

Each child development centre:

Meets on a regular basis.
Uses the facilities of the local church partner through which the program operates.
Provides a programmed curriculum of activities for registered and sponsored children.
Has a committee which provides local accountability and support.
Has a director employed by the church to manage the day-to-day activities.
Employs staff and volunteers selected by the local church.
Operates under Compassion International’s carefully monitored standards and guidelines. 
Provides reasonable levels of safety for children relative to the realities of the surrounding community.

Be assured that sharing a photo online of your sponsored child meets Compassion’s guidelines for publicly sharing information about the children in our program.

Children’s personal information and photographs have different classifications of privacy: information regarding addresses and hometowns are classified but photos and names are fine to share publicly.

We ask supporters to avoid sharing sensitive child information (like whether a child is an orphan, was abandoned or has a certain medical issue), but you should feel free to share the child’s photo, name and your personal sponsorship story. We love to hear your stories, and it is such an encouragement to other supporters as well.

In Proverbs 31:8, the Bible tells us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” We pray sponsors would use #SponsorSelfieDay as an opportunity to advocate for children living in poverty, simply by sharing their own story of how sponsorship changes lives.

Our experience from #SponsorSelfieDay last year was that supporters shared how sponsorship had become something far greater than ‘giving’ or ‘generosity’: it became a relationship that had changed their own lives.

Sharing your sponsorship story and why it is important to you isn’t bragging: you could inspire your own friends and family to consider making a difference in a child’s life, too.

  • Post a photo of you and your sponsored child on Instagram or Facebook.

Your photo doesn’t need to be a selfie. Post a photo of a letter from your sponsored child or their photo on your fridge. If you’ve met your sponsored child, share that memory!

  • Share why you sponsor in the caption.

Your story matters. It shows that anyone can have an impact. Your post might even inspire a friend to change the life of a child through sponsorship, too.

  • Tag @compassionca on Instagram or ‘Compassion Canada’ on Facebook, and use the hashtag #SponsorSelfieDay.

You don’t need to share a photo of your sponsored child to participate. Post any photo you like. The heart of #SponsorSelfieDay is simply encouraging sponsors to share why sponsorship is important to them. If you like, you could share a photo of a letter you have sent them or a picture they have drawn for you. Otherwise, we encourage you to simply write a post explaining why you sponsor.
