Provide children in Nicaragua space to learn and grow.
THIS PROJECT WILL HELP: 353 children in La Paz Centro, Nicaragua
ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: April 2017
La Paz Centro, meaning the peaceful centre, fits it’s name well. A small community of about 10,000 people, it’s nestled in the low, forested hills between Managua, the bustling capital of Nicaragua, and León, the country’s second largest city. Just ten kilometres east looms Momotombo, a still active volcano whose hulking silhouette is a national symbol.
Life seems simple in La Paz Centro, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Unemployment is high; those who can find regular work make around $68 per month. Many families run their own farms, but the clay-like soil in this region makes growing basic crops a challenge. Schools in these rural areas are under-resourced, limiting children’s potential to get a job outside of agriculture.
But Compassion’s church partner is bringing hope to La Paz Centro, addressing these problems with tutoring, job skills training, nutritious meals and medical care, all while sharing God’s love with children! As the program has grown, Compassion centre staff realized a new centre was needed. Currently, 353 children stream through the doors of the church each week, filling its rooms above capacity.
Several years ago, the church saved enough money and began construction on a new centre. But on April 10, 2014, the León region of Nicaragua was struck by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake. 1,500 homes were damaged and hundreds of families from the 20 Compassion centres in the area were affected. The unfinished centre also sustained heavy damage. An engineer assessed the damage, with the news wasn’t good: the centre was unsafe to finish constructing. The church would have to tear it down and rebuild from scratch.
That’s where you come in! This gift will help the church in La Paz Centro build a new Compassion centre—one big enough to house 353 children throughout the week, with room to grow. The blueprints include plans for three large classrooms, an office for staff and storage, a hygienic kitchen to prepare meals and two complete washrooms.
Give children in Nicaragua a safe environment to learn, grow and discover their potential!
