This project will help: 250 children in San Andrés de Tumaco, Colombia
Child development centre: EC0704 Amor y Fe child development centre*
Tumaco is a port city located in the south of Colombia, bordering Ecuador. Its location makes it a strategic point for drug trafficking, guerrillas and paramilitary gangs. As a result, more than 10,000 of its inhabitants have been forced to migrate because of violence related to the drug trade and the fight for land rights. Children are kept indoors, and parents are forced to leave their children home alone while they search for work. Left unsupervised, these children and teens are vulnerable to gangs, prostitution and violence.
Most families in the area live in a marginalized sector along the border with Ecuador. Many families lack access to basic services such as potable water and a sewage system. This means Tumaco’s children are constantly exposed to tropical illnesses such as malaria, intestinal infections, skin diseases, malnutrition, parasites, flu and fever.
But the local church in Tumaco has a deep desire to reach out to their community with the transforming gospel of Christ and respond to some of the most pressing needs of children.
By opening a child development centre, children will have access to health care. They will receive supplementary food as needed. They will have the opportunity to go to school and receive vocational training. They will receive age-appropriate Christian teaching and discipleship, as well as education on important topics like health, hygiene and how to form healthy relationships. And they will also receive personal attention, guidance and love from caring Christian community members.
Real and lasting change happens when children are developed to become the adults who will create change in their community. In Compassion’s program, children learn they are loved, they begin to develop hope for their future, and they realize that God wants to use them to help others. And these children grow up to be givers and leaders in their community.
Help children build a new future free from poverty and full of promise by launching a holistic children’s ministry!
*Although located in Colombia, due to its proximity to Ecuador this child development centre will be facilitated through Compassion Ecuador.

Community information: Tumaco is a small port city near the Ecuador border and has a population of 4,500. Most people work as petty or market traders, earning about $80 a month, but 60 per cent of the population is unemployed. Homes are made of corrugated metal roofs, with wood walls and floors. The main diet is bananas, fish and rice. While there are many Christian churches in the area, as well as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Catholics, there is still much work to be done.
