This project will help: 200 children in Tapuc, Peru
Child development centre: PE0688, Corona del Rey
Children growing up in Tapuc, Peru, have little hope for the future. Many parents eke out a living as subsistence farmers or day labourers and cannot provide for their families’ basic needs. Twenty per cent of the population does not have safe drinking water. Sadly, 60 per cent of children are chronically malnourished, and many suffer from parasites and gastrointestinal problems.
Most children do not progress beyond primary or secondary school, and some do not attend at all. There are no hospitals nearby, and the local health clinic is not equipped to meet the needs of the community. Also, the government does not have the resources to monitor children’s nutrition or health properly. Sadly, child abuse is also a common problem. Without proper nutrition, health care or education, many children here will never escape poverty or discover their own worth and value.
But the local church in Tapuc has a deep desire to reach out to their community with the transforming gospel of Christ and respond to some of the most pressing needs of children.
By opening a child development centre, children will have access to health care and will receive supplementary food as needed. Through your support they will also have the opportunity to go to school and receive vocational training, age-appropriate Christian teaching and discipleship, as well as education on important topics like health, hygiene and how to form healthy relationships. Along the way, they will also receive personal attention, guidance and love from caring members of the Christian community.
Real and lasting change happens when children are developed to become the adults who will create change in their community. In Compassion’s program, children learn they are loved, develop hope for their future and realize that God wants to use them to help others. These children grow up to be givers and leaders in their community
Help children build a new future free from poverty and full of promise by launching a holistic children’s ministry!

Tapuc is a hilly community in Peru of 4,500 people. The closest major city is Cerro de Pasco. Most people work as animal herders or on plantations, but many are forced to find temporary jobs during the winter. Most families make about $275 a month, but 6 per cent of the population is unemployed. Homes are made of corrugated tin roofs, mud or clay walls and cement floors. The main diet is beans, chickens and potato. Most people are Catholic but continue to practise traditional superstitious beliefs as well.
