Sustaining our impact for children living in poverty
When you sponsor a child with Compassion, you’re not just providing clean water, food and access to healthcare and education. You’re sparking hope for a future free from poverty.
In order to sustain our impact for children in poverty, we need to adjust our sponsorship rate. Helping a child overcome poverty costs more today than it did when we last increased our sponsorship rate almost 12 years ago.
An extra $6 might not seem like much to you. Alternatively, it might seem like a lot. Here’s what we want you to know: your extra $6 will make a significant impact for your sponsored child.
We know you might have questions. You can read more in the Frequently Asked Questions below or contact our friendly team.

Due to changing economies and increases in the cost of living, helping a child overcome poverty costs more today than it did when we last increased our sponsorship rate almost 12 years ago. Our sponsorship rate is changing so that everything else you love about sponsorship can stay the same. This rate change ensures sustained impact for the children in Compassion’s programs.
However, while this rate increase is not directly funding new elements in our sponsorship program, you can be confident that a regular part of Compassion’s program is constant evaluation of how to make our programs most effective for children living in poverty. We have committed people—from Compassion centre staff to global program leaders—who work each day to ensure that sponsorship meets the unique needs of each child, their family and community. Sponsorship is never stagnant, but is constantly adapting and innovating to the changing, complex, multi-faceted realities of poverty. Your sustained commitment means that Compassion can continue showing up for children living in poverty, no matter the context or the circumstances.
Sponsorships below our standard rate are covered by other supplementary funds. We understand that not everyone will be able to adopt the new rate and plan to have other funds fill this gap.
We will check in annually with sponsors whose rate remains below the standard sponsorship rate in to see if their situation has changed. We do this to ensure sponsorship accounts stay up to date and to minimize the number of sponsorships Compassion needs to cover with supplementary funds.
We are very aware of the pandemic’s impact on Canadians, which is why we delayed this rate increase for two years. Our last rate increase was almost 12 years ago in 2010. We have been due to increase our rate for several years and had planned to increase our rate in 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we chose to pause those plans. Now we are long overdue to increase our rate and have chosen to do so this year while remaining committed to being responsive to the unique needs of sponsors. We do not want any sponsor to have to cancel their sponsorship(s) and will work with sponsors to ensure they can have a sustained, long-term impact in a way that fit their needs.
Over the last 70 years, Compassion revolutionized the fight against global poverty by partnering with local churches to lift children out of spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty. As a Compassion sponsor, you help sustain that legacy of impact and ensure we can continue helping children in poverty in desperate need right now.
Compassion child sponsorship provides a child living in poverty with formal and non-formal educational opportunities, healthcare, hygiene training, supplementary food, personal attention, guidance and love, and the opportunity to hear about Jesus and receive age-appropriate Christian teaching and discipleship at a local church.
