Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does it mean to donate gifts of securities?

Donating securities is different from donating cash in that you are transferring publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, bonds or other marketable securities you may own directly to Compassion Canada, without needing to sell them first.

What kinds of securities can be donated?

Securities must be publicly traded to qualify. This includes shares, mutual funds, segregated funds, bonds and a few other specific securities.

Should I sell my securities first and then donate the proceeds?

We would advise against this, as securities that are cashed in and then gifted do not qualify for preferred capital gains treatment. The gift should be given directly to Compassion Canada in the form of securities to qualify.

Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation?

Yes! You’ll receive a tax receipt for the full market value of the securities on the day that we receive them in our account. Please note – the value of your donation will be based on the security’s closing price on the day we receive the securities, which may not be the same value as on the day that you initiate the transfer.

How long does the transfer process take?

Most transfers of securities typically take between 5 to 10 business days, depending on your brokerage firm.
