Investing in the church in Tanzania
Planting a new church partner and holistic child development program in Tanzania
Our Response
Your gift is equipping Compassion’s new church partner in Kayenze, Tanzania, to build a holistic child development centre and church facility, complete with five classrooms, two gender-separated toilet blocks with 10 toilets, an office, a kitchen and furniture. The “mother” church, TAG Nyakato, located 29 kilometres from Kayenze, saw the great need to establish a church in Kayenze and legally acquired one hectare of land on which to build a temporary worship hall, along with a four-stance pit latrine. This space serves as a spiritual hub and a centre for community support, offering literacy classes to the community during the week. The church also identified the need for a nursery school in the area to ensure child protection and foster early development. The church plant has already begun transforming lives. Initially, it started with just five members but then grew to serve 20 men, 25 women and 35 children, who have committed their lives to following Christ.
The intervention began with a project awareness meeting that brought together church leaders, committee members, centre staff and leadership from the newly established “daughter” church. The meeting introduced the intervention and outlined its goals, scope, timeline and sponsor requirements. Church leadership then appointed the Project Construction Committee, which included members of the Child and Youth Development Centre Committee, church elders and representatives from the daughter church. The Project Construction Committee is responsible for planning, implementation, oversight and ensuring the project meets quality and budget expectations. Local resource mobilization followed, and church elders confirmed that the community would financially support the intervention, too.
The committee later met to review and approve the final execution plan. They examined the planned structures, confirmed the scope and aligned all activities with the intervention goals. After the committee approved the implementation plan, construction began. The committee conducted regular monitoring and site visits to verify progress and ensure compliance with technical and safety standards. Challenges were addressed promptly to keep activities on track. All expenditures and milestones were recorded and updates were shared with the national office and the church community. This coordinated process ensured accountability and supported steady progress toward meeting the intervention’s goals.
Activities
Kitchen facility: A kitchen was constructed with durable walls and a strong tin roof. This structure is a clean, functional space designed to support future meal preparation and child development activities.
Office space: The church building features a light grey exterior, a tin roof and ample windows to allow natural light. The pastor’s office offers a space to support pastoral care and administrative support.
Classrooms: Five classrooms were built to provide secure, welcoming environments for learning and child development programs.
Toilets: Toilet blocks were built to offer ample sanitary facilities for children, staff and congregation members. Toilet blocks are separated by gender and contain a total of 10 toilets. Soon, staff, children and church members will be able to use the facilities and practise good sanitation and hygiene techniques.
