The Need

Of the 5.2 million children who die around the world each year, 75 per cent die in the first year of life. Babies are at risk of death due to premature birth complications, complications during childbirth, infections, pneumonia and diarrhea. But this is preventable. With training and support, moms in poverty can be empowered to raise healthy and happy babies.

Our Response

Critical care
Your support helps secure access to pre- and postnatal care, skilled birth attendants and medical intervention when necessary.

Home-based care
Mothers are visited in their homes monthly by a Survival specialist, who offers education in prenatal care and early child-rearing as well as one-on-one biblical mentoring.

Group-based learning
At these church-based activities, moms learn skills to earn an income and gain vital knowledge including basic literacy, the importance of breastfeeding and how to prevent malnutrition and disease. These groups combat isolation through a supportive community of mothers who, together, learn about the God who loves them.

El Salvador Stats

Average number of children in household 4

Activities

Early stimulation: The early stimulation rooms supported families with books and toys that fostered motor, cognitive, tactile, auditory and speech skills. Moms participated in early stimulation classes where they learned how to use games and everyday objects to encourage their babies’ holistic growth. Babies were given educational toys each quarter to help with their development.

Parenting education: Moms received guidance on positive parenting practices centred on love, communication and faith. Sessions on topics such as family planning and emotional awareness encouraged parents to create stable and loving homes. They received training in breastfeeding, healthy feeding habits and proper hygiene.

Spiritual support: Parents were encouraged to teach their children about God from a young age. They participated in a session that engaged them in prayer, praise and preaching while focusing on the theme, “Let the children come to me.” This activity inspired mothers to dedicate their babies to God and to celebrate and give thanks for the gift of their children. Each mom was given a Bible to continue reading and learning about God. During a devotional time, two moms surrendered their lives to the Lord.

Health support: Families received medical consultations, hygiene kits, mosquito nets and food packs to meet their needs. Moms learned about nutrition, disease prevention and home remedies such as preparing oral rehydration solutions to treat gastrointestinal sickness. They learned to grow their own vegetable gardens at home to ensure they consume nutritious food. Awareness sessions on dengue and diarrhea prevention helped moms safeguard their children from preventable illnesses.

Home visits: Program staff regularly visited moms and babies at home to provide personalized support. During these visits, implementers checked the health and development of mothers and babies. They provided personalized lessons from parenting curriculum and prayed for the specific needs of families.

Group activities: Events such as baby showers, Children’s Day celebrations and community service projects fostered unity and gratitude. Moms shared experiences where they crafted handmade cards and painted. They celebrated special events like birthdays and Christmas. On Woman’s Day, moms reflected on the theme Grateful Woman. On Mother’s Day, a devotional with the theme Virtuous Woman reminded moms of their important role in their children’s lives.

ReportA message from a pastor

My name is Adán. I am the pastor of the church in Chalatenango, El Salvador, where the child development centre ES0906 is located. I am completely grateful that you support our Survival program. Thanks to your contribution, we are helping many mothers and children. May God continue to bless you always.

We are helping many mothers and their babies with basic food baskets, personal hygiene kits, early stimulation of babies, laboratory tests and medical checkups. Families receive packages for newborn babies and Bibles so that they know the Word of God and teach their children. They enjoyed celebrations such as birthdays, Children’s Day, Christmas parties and Christmas gifts. We provided meetings with educational and spiritual teaching, presentations of children in the church and many other benefits that we as a church provide.

With our program, we have made a big difference. Several mothers come to our centre for us to enroll them because they see all the good benefits we provide for people who need it, such as education and care for their babies. All the attention staff give them motivates the people of our community.

We hope to be able to continue helping all those mothers in the community who need our help and to continue covering those areas of so many needs. We pray that mothers and their entire families can know Christ and accept Him in their hearts. That is our great desire, so that they can be saved.

I want to thank you for your valuable help, because without it we would not be able to assist the mothers and babies, which is so vital. As a church, we pray for all those who serve, for the families who are benefiting from the program and for the donors, asking you to join us in our prayer.

ReportA message from those your gift helped

I hope you and your family are very healthy! My name is Glenda. I am 22 years old and my child development centre is ES0906. I live in Chalatenango, El Salvador. It is a pleasure to greet you, wishing blessings to you and your family!

I want to tell you that I am very grateful, toward God and you, for such a nice program and for being part of a blessing for my baby and me. We receive many benefits, such as basic food packages, hygiene kits, toys to stimulate babies at home, medical checkups and more. May God reward you for such a great blessing!

My baby’s name is Dereck and he is six months old. He is a very happy baby with brown eyes and black hair. He likes playing, and when he is angry, he gets very stiff and it is a signal that he is angry. When our baby came into our lives, I felt nervous and also happy to meet him. When he was born completely healthy, I thanked God that everything went well and for giving us the blessing of being parents.

The Survival program has impacted my life because I am learning how to take care of myself and my baby and how to eat healthy. They give us educational and spiritual teachings, and the early stimulation that my baby receives is a great support because he develops more motor skills. I like the activities, participating and sharing with other mothers and babies and the delicious refreshments.

On behalf of other mothers, we thank you for the help and support that you provide as our sponsor. May God bless, take care of and protect you every day of your life. You are always in our prayers. I ask you to please pray for my baby to grow up healthy, for God to protect and take care of him and for God to give my family wisdom and health so we can watch him grow up.

With fondness and blessings,

Glenda

ReportA message from a partnership facilitator

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ bless your lives in a very special way. My name is Douglas. I am the Partnership Facilitator, and I am currently serving the church in Santa Barbara. The program, called “Nehemias,” at the child development centre (ES0906), is where the Survival program operates. This is the essential base where we take care of babies.

The Survival program helps prevent maternal mortality during delivery. The program facilitates preventive and healing treatments. In addition, mothers are instructed to take special care to prevent diseases in babies. The Survival program supports medical care to prevent death of babies and their mothers.

The Survival program is a tremendous blessing because, through the intervention, many mothers and fathers are coming to know Christ. This is transforming their lives. We have witnessed testimonies where each time we see more united marriages. Program participants impact their neighbours as they invite others to attend church and thus know about the mercies of Christ in their lives.

The mothers are very excited, and the church is teaching them about entrepreneurship in different areas. The income they receive from entrepreneurship helps them so that their economic burden may be much easier in their homes.

The Survival program is essential for the children who are part of the intervention. Many would not survive, and many would not reach five years old. All the activities that are developed from the moment the baby is in the womb, such as medical checkups, help the babies to develop fully, in addition to all the care they obtain following delivery.

Infinite thanks for your unconditional support for each of the mothers and their babies. Many lives have been transformed, and this is happening due to your great kindness. God will reward each of you!

Sincerely,

Douglas
