Several times throughout the gospels, Jesus is described as being “moved with compassion.” What exactly does that mean? What did it look like for Jesus to be moved? And what does it have to do with us?

This Advent season, we are reminded of when Jesus, the Word made flesh, “moved into the neighbourhood” (John 1:14 MSG). This was a defining moment for what it means to move with compassion—the Son of God being so moved by the need and brokenness in this world that He would move into our neighbourhood, bringing the hope of restoration. This move of compassion reveals the heart of God for people across the globe.

Move With Compassion, written by Compassion Canada writers John Ayena and Rebekah Malbrecht, is a 7-day journey inviting you to allow Jesus’ heart to shape your own. This Advent devotional will take you all around our global neighbourhood and give you a glimpse into the same needs that moved Jesus’ heart—that you might be inspired to see as Jesus saw, feel the way He felt and move with compassion the way He first moved toward us.

Plan description: The Bible often tells us that Jesus was “moved with compassion.” What does that mean and how can it inform our lives today? At Christmas, we focus on one of Jesus’ biggest moves of all: He became flesh and “moved into the neighbourhood” (John 1:14 MSG). This Advent, we invite you to explore your global neighbourhood and see how Jesus continues to move with compassion in the world today.
