After a long Canadian winter, the spring season is finally upon us.

God’s green earth is waking up from its rest, bringing forth rains of refreshing, warmer temperatures and the promise of new life! Oh, and a sneeze or two for those of us with seasonal allergies.

As we look out at colourful gardens and radiant sunsets, we are reminded of a wonderful Creator through the wonder of His creation. We remember that God has made everything good — from birds of the air to the flowers of the soil — and that He has invited us to care for the earth:

“[God] made them rulers over the works of [His] hands; [He] put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.”

Psalm 8:6-8

As stewards of God’s creation, the way that we treat the earth today determines the environment that future generations inherit. Children can experience deep flourishing when surrounded by safe, healthy environments. On this Earth Day, we’re highlighting two sustainable Gifts of Compassion, which you can give to shape communities that help children thrive while caring for God’s creation.

Solar energy for five Compassion centres

In 2023, a new Compassion centre was launched in the Nsanje district of Malawi. Being located in a remote village without access to the national power grid, centre staff struggled with routine administrative tasks that required electricity. Staff would often travel long distances to access power, a time-consuming and expensive effort.

That all changed with the installation of a solar energy system, bringing clean and sustainable electricity to the centre. No more fuel wasted on expensive trips to the trading centre; staff could focus on serving children and caregivers.

“Hope and light go together; the solar power has empowered us and made work easy, as we conveniently work to serve the children in our community,” says Dan, the Compassion centre director.

You can bring the very same hope and support to five Compassion centres in Ethiopia. With your gift, centres will have access to an environmentally friendly and reliable source of energy, ensuring that staff can deliver life-changing programs to over 1,800 children and their families. A sustainable energy source making a sustained impact on generations to come — that’s a win for children and a win for the planet.

Clean water and safe sanitation for children

Participants from the centre are having fun in their community. The group of boys are running down a dirt path kicking a soccer ball.

On the bank of the River Huallaga in Peru sits a picturesque village called Tununtunumba. The people here know the wonder of creation and the need to care for it — the community is surrounded by beautiful mountains, and many community members work in agriculture.

In 2019, when a Compassion centre was established across the river, centre staff noticed that many children from Tununtunumba suffered from stomach diseases. The culprit? The water they drank, which came from the river, was polluted and carried waterborne diseases.

The Compassion centre, equipped with a water treatment plant, began to transport safe drinking water across the river to children in TununtunumbaToday, children in the village are healthy and thriving.

Children in Tununtunumba, Peru are receiving the centre director, who is transporting the safe water for them. The director is holding the water container on his shoulder.

For many children in Tanzania, clean water and safe sanitation is scarce — you can change that reality. With your gift, children at multiple Compassion centres will no longer have to drink from polluted water sources; instead, they’ll have access to clean water from boreholes and safe sanitation facilities.

Give Clean Water and Sanitation

When we care for the Earth, we care for future generations, too.

Give a sustainable gift this Earth Day.
