Children’s ministry launch

Funding required: $6,900

This project will help: 200 children in Paranthan, Sri Lanka

Child development centre: LK0908, Navajeevanam Child Development Centre

Executive summary

In Paranthan, Sri Lanka, many children have little hope for the future. Many caregivers support their families by cultivating rice paddies, but the work is seasonal and low-paying, leaving families struggling to survive. Malnutrition and chronic illnesses are common among children, but the nearest health centre is 12 kilometres away so they can’t get the care they need. There are primary and secondary schools, but the dropout rate is very high. Sadly, child abuse and trafficking are very common.

The country has experienced 30 years of civil war which has left many families traumatized and fearful. Teen pregnancy, separation and addiction are common. Without help, children stand little chance of breaking free from the destructive cycle of poverty.

But Compassion’s local partner in Paranthan has a deep desire to reach out to their community with God’s love and respond to some of the most pressing needs of children.

By opening a child development centre, children will have access to health care and will receive supplementary food as needed. Through your support they will also have the opportunity to go to school and receive vocational training and education on important topics like health, hygiene and how to form healthy relationships. Along the way, they will also receive personal attention, guidance and love from caring Christian community members.

Real and lasting change happens when children are developed to become the adults who will create change in their community. In Compassion’s program, children learn they are loved, develop hope for their future and realize that God wants to use them to help others. These children grow up to be givers and leaders in their community.

Help children build a new future free from poverty and full of promise by launching a holistic children’s ministry!
