This project will help: 177 children in Mercedario, Bolivia

Child development centre: BO0478, Renewing Values Foundation Child Development Centre

Executive summary

Mercedario is a community of about 4,000 people in the city of El Alto, Bolivia. Children growing up here have little hope for the future. Most caregivers work in low-paying jobs as street vendors or animal herders, barely earning enough to get by. Early marriage is common, and young parents often lack the support they need to make good decisions and raise their children in a safe and loving environment.

Many families are large and thus end up living in overcrowded conditions. Most homes also lack access to basic services like running water, electricity and proper sewage. As a result, children are vulnerable to many hygiene-related illnesses, causing them to miss school more frequently. During the shift to virtual learning during the pandemic, children without Internet access or computers at home faced new barriers to their education. Many have dropped out of school entirely. Left alone while their parents are at work, children are vulnerable to danger and exploitation. Without support, they will grow up to repeat the cycle of poverty.

But the local church in Mercedario has a deep desire to reach out to their community with the transforming gospel of Christ and respond to some of the most pressing needs of children.

By opening a child development centre, children will have access to health care and will receive supplementary food as needed. Through your support they will also have the opportunity to go to school and receive vocational training, age-appropriate Christian teaching and discipleship, as well as education on important topics like health, hygiene and how to form healthy relationships. Along the way, they will also receive personal attention, guidance and love from caring members of the Christian community.

Real and lasting change happens when children are developed to become the adults who will create change in their community. In Compassion’s program, children learn they are loved, develop hope for their future and realize that God wants to use them to help others. These children grow up to be givers and leaders in their community.

Help children build a new future free from poverty and full of promise by launching a holistic children’s ministry!
