Your sponsored child’s number is on any letter that you receive from your child. You will find it printed above the barcode that is attached to every letter your child sends, along with his or her name. You will also find it beside his or her name on the letter writing paper included with every child letter (on the left side of the page).

Child numbers always begin with two letters (indicating country) followed by seven digits.

No less than 80 percent of your monthly support benefits your child, either directly or indirectly. Compassion-assisted children and their families receive no cash. Benefits are in the form of goods and services, carefully designed, delivered and purchased according to each child’s individual needs.

As a general rule, 20 percent of these funds are invested in the development, oversight, and auditing of Compassion’s programs in which every assisted-child participates. These investments ensure that each child receives the best care possible, rather than becoming the recipient of a handout.

The remaining funds are used to meet the day-to-day needs of each child. This can include:

  • nutritional meals and the provision of clean drinking water;
  • medical and dental check-ups, care and education;
  • educational supplies and tuition fees;
  • clothing including school uniforms;
  • non-formal educational and life-skills training such as participation in excursions and camps;
  • extra-curricular activities such as drama, dance, music and art etc.; and
  • biblical training and discipleship

Our local church partners also invest considerable resources in the development of each child, allowing Compassion and the church to help bring an eternal solution to poverty in the life of a child.

What is Sharing Compassion?

November 28, 2017 11:17 am

Sharing Compassion is an opportunity for sponsors to share their story of sponsoring with Compassion with others so that more children can be released from poverty in Jesus’ name. It can happen anytime and anywhere. The purpose is to help bring the needs of children in poverty to the attention of caring Christians who could help them. We provide you with all the resources you need for a successful event, including an appropriate video to share and presentation ideas.

In addition to your monthly sponsorship donation and encouraging letters, you may wish to send gifts to your sponsored child. We are delighted when sponsors decide to provide additional support. We do not mail parcels because delivery in developing countries is unreliable and expensive, but you are able to send paper items like stickers, posters and colouring pages.

We also provide an opportunity to send a monetary gift. The options are: Birthday Gift, General Gift, Family Gift or Child Development Centre Gift. Compassion Canada forwards 100 per cent of the money to purchase a gift in the child’s community. Child Development Centre staff assist children and their families to ensure funds are used appropriately and to discuss how to best use the gift to benefit the child and family. If you have a specific gift in mind, we will forward your suggestion, but ultimately the child or their family will make the final decision.

Due to the limitations of customs regulations, only paper items can be sent to sponsored children. Items made of paper up to 8.5″ by 11″ and up to .25″ thick can be sent on. Compassion cannot send on or return gifts that do not fall within these guidelines. If you would like to bless your child in other ways, please send a financial gift, which your child can use to purchase something they really need. Your money will go a lot further in the countries where we work and it will help stimulate the local economy.

Examples of what you can send in the mail include: photos, greeting cards, stickers, bookmarks, postcards, colouring pages, booklets, small calendars, scripture cards, decorative writing paper, paper dolls, and paper planes.

Items which we cannot send include: pencils, crayons, balloons, gum, jewelry, candy, magnets, clothes, toys, seeds, etc.

You may send paper items to your sponsored child. We cannot send non-paper items to sponsored children due to the high cost of postage, the risk of loss, theft or damage. It can also be very difficult to determine a culturally appropriate gift for a sponsored child. You may wish to send a financial gift to your sponsored child which we can ensure is used to choose a suitable gift for him or herself. This will often be done with the help of a family member or project worker. If you would like to recommend how your money gift should be spent please add an instruction when you send it. However, bear in mind that your sponsored child may have a need for a very practical gift.

We do not encourage sponsors to send items by mail or courier to your child’s country because it is not guaranteed to reach your child. When a package other than paper goods is sent, there will be custom charges that our Country office would not be able to pay and there is no guarantee that this item will get to our office. The mail systems in most of the countries we work in are not reliable.

What is the Christmas Gift Fund?

March 19, 2013 10:49 am

Christmas is one of the most special times of the year for sponsored children. For many, Christmas is the only time they receive gifts. The Christmas Gift Fund provides an age-appropriate Christmas gift for every child registered with Compassion. These gifts include clothing, blankets and bed-linen, toiletries, practical items and, of course, a range of toys. Funds are pooled internationally and equally distributed amongst all Compassion-assisted children, including those who do not yet have a sponsor. Compassion Canada suggests sponsors contribute an amount of $25 per child to this fund. Each sponsor has the opportunity to send a special Christmas card to the child they sponsor, which can be written online or sent via mail.

Compassion’s child development ministry is not based on material handouts. We facilitate individual child development by providing learning opportunities that a child may not encounter in another situation. Learning is central to Compassion’s mission-we provide life skills that foster each child’s success. Learning opportunities also are provided for parents, which enables them to improve their parenting skills and provide for their families. Therefore we do not allow extra money to be given every month, but there are several opportunities over the year for you to bless your sponsored child and family with a special monetary gift.

How do I send a Christmas gift?

March 18, 2013 12:21 pm

You can send a Christmas gift to your sponsored child by making a donation to the Christmas Gift Fund.

We recommend giving $25 per child. Donations to the Christmas Gift Fund are pooled to ensure no Compassion-assisted child goes without a gift, even if they are not yet sponsored. Gifts that might be purchased for the children by the child development centre staff include clothing, shoes, small toys, household items, linen, food and livestock.

You can donate to the Christmas Gift Fund online or by calling our office toll-free 1 800 563-5437.
