The gifts shown in the Gifts of Compassion catalogue are linked to specific initiatives being supported through our Respond with Compassion programs. While we will not be able to name the individual or family that benefits from your donation, we will be reporting on all these initiatives as they are completed at the field.

No less than 80 percent of your monthly support benefits your child, either directly or indirectly. Compassion-assisted children and their families receive no cash. Benefits are in the form of goods and services, carefully designed, delivered and purchased according to each child’s individual needs.

As a general rule, 20 percent of these funds are invested in the development, oversight, and auditing of Compassion’s programs in which every assisted-child participates. These investments ensure that each child receives the best care possible, rather than becoming the recipient of a handout.

The remaining funds are used to meet the day-to-day needs of each child. This can include:

  • nutritional meals and the provision of clean drinking water;
  • medical and dental check-ups, care and education;
  • educational supplies and tuition fees;
  • clothing including school uniforms;
  • non-formal educational and life-skills training such as participation in excursions and camps;
  • extra-curricular activities such as drama, dance, music and art etc.; and
  • biblical training and discipleship

Our local church partners also invest considerable resources in the development of each child, allowing Compassion and the church to help bring an eternal solution to poverty in the life of a child.

What is the extra $10 used for?

November 28, 2017 11:20 am

Sponsorship plus Urgent Needs provides funds for additional benefits for sponsored children, their families and communities that cannot be provided by child sponsorship funds alone. While sponsorship funds provide activities which directly benefit your sponsored child, the extra $10 from Sponsorship plus Urgent needs is used to fund initiatives and programs which sow further into the lives of Compassion assisted children, their families and communities.

As Compassion raises more funds for these activities, we will be able to assist more sponsored children with these additional benefits.

Some of these include:

Emergency medical care

HIV and AIDS Initiative – includes education on prevention as well as care

Education and training programs for parents of sponsored children

Partner church development – including church partner staff training.

You can easily donate to Compassion Canada through your financial institution’s phone banking service. The payee is Compassion Canada and you can use your supporter number as the account number. Your supporter number will start with an “8-,” and be followed by 8 digits.

Depending on the bank you may need to omit the “8” or the dash. If your donation is for anything other than sponsorship—such as Urgent Needs, Christmas Gift Fund, etc.—please instruct the bank to include a note.

Presently, we work with Royal Bank, Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Canadian Western Bank, Citizens Bank and Credit Unions located in the provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Alternatively, you can make a donation by credit card by calling our Contact Centre at 1-800-563-5437 or through our secure website.

Yes, it is possible for a group to sponsor one child. We have a few options to make donations simpler.

For a group of up to five people, we can set up separate accounts for each sponsor and connect them to the same child. Each person is responsible for their own donations and can choose the withdrawal option (credit card, bank withdrawal, check, online banking, etc.) that best suits them.

If the group consists of more than five people and individual tax receipts are required, please submit the names, contact information and donation amounts for each contributor to our office. We assign one person to be the main contact. That person is responsible for coordinating donations based on the group’s preference. Alternatively, anyone in the group is welcome to send donations using the group’s supporter number.

Follow the link to search for a child your group can sponsor.

In addition to your monthly sponsorship donation and encouraging letters, you may wish to send gifts to your sponsored child. We are delighted when sponsors decide to provide additional support. We do not mail parcels because delivery in developing countries is unreliable and expensive, but you are able to send paper items like stickers, posters and colouring pages.

We also provide an opportunity to send a monetary gift. The options are: Birthday Gift, General Gift, Family Gift or Child Development Centre Gift. Compassion Canada forwards 100 per cent of the money to purchase a gift in the child’s community. Child Development Centre staff assist children and their families to ensure funds are used appropriately and to discuss how to best use the gift to benefit the child and family. If you have a specific gift in mind, we will forward your suggestion, but ultimately the child or their family will make the final decision.

Send your child a gift online.

What is Sponsorship plus Urgent Needs?

November 28, 2017 10:54 am

Child sponsorship provides a holistic development program for children in Compassion’s ministry. But at times there are other factors that can have a significant impact on a child’s life. This additional $10 donation to the Urgent Needs Fund helps to address those unforeseen circumstances.

This donation does not go directly to your sponsored child, but is available to help all sponsored children and their families around the world as needed. This could include—but is not limited to—emergency medical care, disaster relief and reconstruction, income-generation training and other critical interventions. These initiatives combine with the benefits of child sponsorship to break the cycle of poverty.

You can set up a monthly donation to the Urgent Needs Fund online at any time.

Funds raised from the Gifts of Compassion catalogue are used to support Compassion’s Response Programs. Should excess funds be raised in a particular area, we will meet other urgent needs as they arise.

While we most often seek funds that enable us to respond to the urgent needs of our children, we also seek funding to offset the cost of our core programs. By raising money to offset the cost of core programs (like dental check-ups), the monthly support given by our sponsors can do more for the children we serve.

Gifts that you can send to your sponsored child are different from Gifts of Compassion.

While it is highly likely that your sponsored child will benefit from a Gifts of Compassion throughout their time in the sponsorship program, you cannot choose to provide a direct gift for your child in this way.

Compassion greatly encourages sponsors to provide monetary gifts to their sponsored child throughout the year online here or by calling our office at 1-800-563-5437.

Gifts for your sponsored child include child, family gift, or birthday gift. 100 per cent of these monetary gifts reach your sponsored child and family. Appropriate gifts are purchased in your child’s country by child development centre staff in consultation with the child and family. Where possible, gifts are bought within the community helping to support the local economy.

What are my donation method options?

March 19, 2013 10:49 am

Donations can be made by pre-authorized withdrawal (bank account or credit card), internet banking, telephone banking, Interac online, cheque or money order. These withdrawals can be made monthly or annually. Pre-authorized donations are safe, easy and convenient. Pre-authorized withdrawal from your bank account is our preferred method of payment, as it saves Compassion hundreds of thousands of dollars each year in transaction fees. Automatic withdrawals can be setup through our website by completing the Update Your Information form or by calling our office. Cheques made out to Compassion Canada will be accepted, as will money orders. Unfortunately deposits can not be made directly into Compassion’s bank account.

Click here to go to the Update Payment Details form.
